What is Crawl Space Encapsulation?

In a general sense, crawl space encapsulation is the act of sealing your home’s crawl space off from outside elements. Crawl spaces are prone to high humidity, mold, rot, and general nastiness that can directly affect your quality of life throughout the rest of your home. About half of the air that you breathe in your home comes up from the lower level, so it’s very important to make sure that you take proper care of your crawl space. Otherwise, the nastiness mentioned earlier will quickly find its way into your living areas.

Why Encapsulate?

Due to the phenomenon known as the “Stack Effect”, as much as 50% of the air you breathe inside your home can come directly from the crawl space.

As hot air rises and escapes through the upper levels of your home, it is replaced by unpleasant crawl space air, creating a pulling effect that exposes you and your family to poor air quality in the living spaces of your home.

This unpleasant crawl space air is caused by mold, pests, musty smells, and other unwanted conditions in your crawl space. These will all negatively affect the air you breathe every day, and can contribute to allergies, asthma, and other illnesses.

You take care of your home, ensuring that your family’s living space is as safe and comfortable as possible. Your time and money are spent so that you and your family can enjoy a clean and healthy home. But how often do you crawl under your house to clean or to check for problems? Half of the air circulating through your home has come through your crawl space. Any mold, pests, musty smells, or other unwanted conditions in your crawl space will negatively affect the air you breathe every day. All of these factors can contribute to allergies, asthma, and other illnesses.

You wouldn’t subject your family to unhealthy conditions if you could see them every day. Why allow these conditions to negate the effort you’ve made in your home? When you imagine crawling under your house, do you assume you’ll get dirty or be uncomfortable? Most people never bother to check on the condition of this area, or the appliances under their home. No one wants to get dirty or wet every time they check on their water heater or HVAC. This area often goes unused simply because it’s damp or dirty. With an encapsulated crawl space, you will never have to worry about the condition of the space under your house again. Together, we can transform this space into a welcoming and clean place, that you won’t mind visiting to check on appliances, or using for storage.

How Do We Do It?

Step 1: Cleanup

As with any crawl space related project, the first step will be to clean things up. Crawl spaces are usually the most neglected areas of any home, and there will often be debris and damaged insulation that needs to be removed. We’ll also level the soil or gravel, take care of any mold or pests, and just generally make sure everything is ready for installation.

Step 2: Drainage System

One of the biggest steps in transforming your crawl space is to ensure that water can no longer threaten its comfort and safety. To do this, we install a drainage system around the inside of your foundation walls. This drainage is paired with one of our custom designed sump pump systems, specifically picked for your home’s needs. By collecting any intruding water into one point, we can evacuate it from your crawl space before it has a chance to cause damage to your home.

Step 3: Apply Reinforced Liners

The encapsulation process couldn’t be complete without physically sealing your crawl space. By using the revolutionary WhiteCap reinforced vapor barrier, we can protect your home from the ground up. Along with the complete line of WhiteCap products, you will be left with the most advanced and protected crawl space possible.

Step 4: Dehumidifier

After all this work, it’s important to maintain the state of your crawl space even further with a dehumidifier. The WhiteCap PureDry70 crawl space dehumidifier will take care of the moisture and more. PureDry70 has a compact design that can fit even into the tightest crawl spaces and will dehumidify your crawl space along with filtering mold, bacteria, and dust. This is the finishing touch in making sure the air inside your home is healthy and just pleasant overall.
